Oh my goodness I'm SO glad I stumbled upon this gift guide. This is going to make buying hostess gifts so much easier this holiday season!

Host/hostess gifts. ‘Tis the season of party after party, which brings up the inevitable questions: should I bring a gift? If so, what do I bring? Personally I am of the opinion that you never come empty handed when entering someone’s home, especially if it is someone who is not in your inner circle. That person is allowing you into one of the most personal and private parts of their life, their home. I always like to bring a small gift that shows I am grateful for them allowing me into their life like this.

This practice used to be way more common, but has fallen by the waste side as of late. Honestly, I think the reason being is a lot of people aren’t taught to do it anymore. There is something lovely though about honoring a person for their invitation. By the way, if this is a business dinner/party, this will go VERY far with your business contact. It’s better to give than to receive right?

So what do you get? What kind of gift would be an appropriate for a host/hostess? Well first, let me put your mind at ease. It doesn’t have to be some big, expensive gift. In fact it’s better if it’s not. This is a memento. A token of gratitude if you will. The purpose of this is thankfulness not showmanship. Below I have put some ideas together for a great host/hostess gift. Bonus they are all for under $25.

Wine

Wine is always a great option for a good hosting gift. I’m listing below a couple of my favorite cheaper wines that you can get in a grocery store or on Amazon.

Candles

Candles are a great, simple gift to give to a person. Pretty much everyone likes them. These are some of my favorites.

Flowers

Stop by your local flower shop (support small business right?!) and grab a bouquet of the happiest flowers you can find. It’s always a lovely thing to add beauty.

Essential Oils

If you love essential oils get a cute little diffuser, maybe put in a recipe card or two of different diffuser recipes and give a gift of a couple oils. I personally use Young Living oils. They are my favorite by far.

Ornaments

Ornaments are such a great host/hostess gift during the Christmas season. They are generic enough that you can get something everyone will like. However if you know the person well then you can really have fun choosing an ornament that reminds you of them. Can’t go wrong with an ornament!

Box of Candy

Pop on over to See’s Candy or grab some Ferrero Rocher. The holiday season, among other things, is also the season of eating haha. Most people will enjoy a treat or two during this time. Make sure and stay away from any allergies (unless you know they don’t have any) such as nuts and gluten. Also, make sure they aren’t allergic to chocolate like my uncle… true story.

Coffee Table Book

This is one of my favorites. Again this can be fairly generic, like inspirational quotes. Yet these gifts are always thoughtful and add a nice touch to anyone’s home.

Coloring Book

My next gift idea runs in a similar vein. Adult coloring books are all the rage currently. Grab a pack of colored pencils and one of these babies, and off you go!

Mugs

I love giving mugs as a gift, probably because I love receiving them. They are a great, fun gift that can be as generic or specific as you’d like. I like to fill them with either some teas, candies, or cookies for a little something extra.

Festive Food

My last suggest is some kind of festive food. Maybe a nice fruit basket, or fancy cheeses. You could do some decadent teas, or homemade cookies. Tons of options here.

What are some of your favorite host/hostess gifts that you’ve received or given? Would love to hear! I’m always looking for new gifts to give!

xoxo, Lauren

  1. Great blog. How do we reteach the concept of hostess gifts? And does hosting a home group once a month count? 😜 You catchn that southern hospitality or is California just the ‘no manners’ State?

    • I think you reteach it, by starting to give them yourself. Most people don’t do it anymore simply because they don’t know about it. And I would argue that these days most of the states are no manners states. I actually got inspired to do it again myself by The Hallmark Channel’s Home and Family talk show. They had a guest on there from CA who was talking about why hostess gifts are important. 🙂
