I love family. Anyone who’s known me for more than 10 minutes knows this. For all it’s quirks and chaos at times, I think it is one of the most wonderful and meaningful parts of life. When family is good, it. is. good. Having a little one of my own has only validated these feelings of mine.
I have a passion for the generations. Seeing the generations working together, being together in harmony is one of my favorite things as well. I think that’s why when family is good, it is so dang good. The older generations give love, assurance, and wisdom to the younger. The younger generations give passion, joy, and newness to the older. It’s a beautiful thing when it all works together.
As well all know family can be both biological and adopted (i.e. actual adoption, friends, mentors, etc.). Both fill the space in our hearts that require family. There is a certain type of love that only family can give. It reflects God’s love. It is a deep lovely – tried and true. Powerful.
I love how family always has your back, and pushes you to be your best. I even love how siblings know you so well that they are the only ones who know those secret buttons to push.
The one thing I have learned though is that for family to continue to be good (like any relationship) it has to be grown and worked. There has to be an effort made, forgiveness given, and love abounding.
As we begin to embark on the holiday season, I would love to take a moment and reflect on the awesomeness that is family.
5 Reasons Why Family is Awesome
I don’t know about your family, but mine always has the best stories that come out. Granted, half of them are at my expense but they are just told so hilariously that I can’t help but laugh along. That’s what’s so great about family. They know all the nitty gritty about each others lives and can’t wait to joke about it. Or movie quotes, we quote movies, tv shows, and songs like they are apart of our everyday conversation! Which leads me to #2.
They Know You Better than Anyone Else
This may be good or bad haha. However for me there is something comforting in having a group of people who know and love me for me. The whole me, not just the bits and pieces that I show others I don’t know as well. They know my goofy side, my sad side, my mad side, my happy side, my lovely side, etc. In a world where people are increasingly more secluded from each other, it’s nice to have some people who are so close.
They Love You Regardless
My most favorite part about family – unconditional love. Let’s be real. Sometimes our poop stinks… badly. Yet these fabulous people continue to love us through our mess and call us up to who they know we can be. This kind of love is raw, hard, and sacrificial. Thank God there are people who love like this in our lives.
They Want What’s Best for You
Family members are excellent cheerleaders. They cheer you on, help pick you up when you fall, and encourage you to achieve your potential. Oh sure, every once in a while this can be a messy process and disagreements can happen. However, overall their heart is good and they really just want you to be happy.
Hanging lights, watching football (or in our case hockey), drinking cocoa, etc. Holidays are such a wonderful time for making memories and enjoying traditions. They are always a happy and joy-filled time.
